Shoulder Pain

At Capital District Vitality Center, we have incredible success in turning around chronic and acute shoulder situations. In a previous health article, which you can view here, we addressed the dynamics of posture and tone that affect shoulder mechanics. The intervention that I take in my office, especially for chronic shoulder problems, is multifocal and multitier.  There are many unique therapies that we use in our treatment program to treat the complexity of a chronic shoulder injury, as well as chiropractic and neuromuscular interventions to address mechanical issues.

Chronic is defined as twelve or more weeks of persistent pain or symptoms. When someone suffers from a chronic shoulder problem, over time, the mechanics of the body instinctively stop moving that area. When we start moving in aberrant planes we lose the full, robust range of motion we normally have. Frozen shoulder, as it is often referred to, is really an unfortunate and uncomfortable situation that may happen after surgery, injury, or even just seemingly occurring on its own. Basically, the presentation of this frozen shoulder condition is that someone cannot adduct their shoulder much beyond 90 degrees, depending on how severe their symptoms are. Oftentimes, under these circumstances, physicians will put a patient under anesthesia and break up the adhesions with manipulation or even surgical procedures.

Trigenics® is my flagship tool that I use in the office for lots of different musculoskeletal problems. It is a neuromuscular technique that is miraculous for freeing up frozen shoulders and other type of shoulder movement disorders. Trigenics® looks at the beginning end of a muscle, called the origin, the insertion and the middle of the muscle itself (or the belly of the muscle) which are the neuromuscular spindles. The tools and techniques I use in coordination with Trigenics® to treat chronic shoulder problems allow us to strengthen and lengthen muscles.

When you have some type of a movement asymmetry, meaning things do not move as evenly as they should, this eventually creates a distortion of the shoulder mechanics. Let us say you are more flexor dominant, which is typically where most people have their problems – we can oftentimes stretch the flexors that are too tight and strengthen the extensors, where the rotator cuff and other postural muscles are located, in the back of the shoulder.

Chronic shoulder issues also affect the neck because the neck and the shoulder are a single unit. We think of them independently but they are actually interdependent on each other’s motion, so we always address the neck and the shoulder at the same time when looking at the postural deviations and the lack of normal mechanical motion.

Besides Trigenics®, we have a host of other tools that we use to treat shoulder disorders, one of the most powerful being a 25watt class 4 cold laser. I have been using lasers for 15 years now and they are astounding tools for healing. One of the results of using a laser is an increase in what is called mitochondrial function.  Mitochondria are in really high concentration in muscles, nerves and lots of different tissues. The mitochondria are an organelle, part of a cell, and it is the power production center where energy is produced. Lasers actually increase the replication of the mitochondria within the cell itself and are incredibly powerful for ending pain and inflammation in the body.

We also employ pulsed electromagnetics which is a complement to photic (light) stimulation light. Pulsed electromagnetics have been around for about 50 years but have become increasing popular in the last decade with institutes such as NASA for treating conditions on a cellular level.

These are just a few of the tools we use to treat chronic shoulder issues.
